VIDA

VIDA Fitness, the Health and Wellness Partner for MSDC's Healthy Physician Program, is working to continuously improve the health and wellness of our healthcare professionals and their patients. We believe that exercise and nutrition are critical components of the health care continuum along with a restful night’s sleep. VIDA Fitness provides each new client with a personalized onboarding service to set realistic goals and identify potential roadblocks.  We have worked with our Medical Advisory Board to create a referral pathway for physicians and medical providers to help their patients make long-term lifestyle changes.  One example is the Evolve Wellness Program, which is our approach to comprehensive wellness.

Evolve is an insurance eligible, results driven program available virtually or in person.  Each participant receives an initial assessment, personalized attention, and group socialization throughout the 12-week program.  VIDA’s board-certified registered dietitians lead each session and participants have unlimited access to our exercise facilities and group fitness classes.  Click here for a full program overview.  Most CareFirst members pay nothing out-of-pocket.  Non-CareFirst members may use Health Savings or Flex Spending Account (HSA/FSA) funds for the program.

Compassion & ChoicesCompassion & Choices believes the goal of good end-of-life care is to prevent as much physical and emotional suffering as possible. Not aimed at curing illness, the focus is on comfort, dignity, and quality of life. For many, it is reassuring just to know that options exist. There is no one right answer or choice; preferences vary from person to person. Candid conversations are crucial to ensuring patients get the care they want at the end of life, so it’s important to discuss these priorities not just with patients, but with their families and other loved ones and put those priorities in writing whenever possible.

Nutrition for Wellness

Mar 10, 2022, 09:12 AM by VIDA Fitness
Hippocrates call to “let food be thy medicine” shows the impact of nutrition on wellness – and illness, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and brain function. This wellness blog from VIDA Fitness shares nutrition tips and a testimonial you can share with patients about someone whose triglyceride levels dropped from 277 to 90 mg/dL.

The following is provided by MSDC Health and Wellness Partner VIDA Fitness

More than 2,500 years ago, Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

These are great words to live by.

What you put in your mouth is the top priority in achieving overall wellness. If we get proper nutrition, our organs and bodily systems will perform well. Conversely, unhealthy eating habits dramatically increase the chances of developing complications and susceptibility to diseases and more.

After committing to his nutrition and working with a Registered Dietitian at VIDA Fitness, VIDA member Alex Graham saw his triglyceride level decrease from 277 to 90 (normal is less than 149). He stated, “I feel empowered to make the right decisions regarding what I eat, and I physically feel so much better than I did two years ago.”

Like Graham, patient and doctors alike can consider the following five ways in which the nutrients we consume affect our overall wellness.

Brain Function
Nutrient-rich foods like nuts, seeds, and avocados contain brain power-boosting Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

Energy
Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains and drink lots of water!

A Healthy Heart
Eat four or five servings of both fruits and vegetables and a diet rich in low-fat dairy and whole grains.

Healthy Teeth and Bones
Eat foods rich in calcium include yogurt, cheese, milk, bok choy, broccoli, soy products, fruit juices, and cereals.

Emotional Health
Complex carbs such as beans, whole grains and legumes maintain better blood sugar levels will enhance energy and mood.
