UnitedHealth Changes Referral Policies
As of September 1, 2006, UnitedHealthcare has eliminated the Consultant Treatment Plan for specialty medical services for MD IPA and Optimum Choice members. Now, primary care physicians may write a referral for up to four visits in six months. It is important for Primary Care Physicians to indicate the number of visits on the referral form; if a number is not noted, the referral is valid for only one visit. Standing referrals remain available for certain patients.
Also, beginning January 1, 2007, the referral process for behavioral health services will change for all MD IPA and Optimum Choice members. Primary care physicians may refer MD IPA and Optimum Choicer members to any participating behavioral health specialist for an unlimited number of visits (up to the benefit policy maximum) for up to one year from the date of the referral. No Consultant Treatment Plan will be required.
