The Role of Nutrition in Psychiatric Treatment - WPS Fall Symposium
Provided by the Washington Psychiatric Society (WPS)

The WPS Fall Symposium will feature leading experts on nutrition and psychiatric treatment. The presentations will address different aspects and approaches to integrating nutrition in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. This course is designed to help you understand:
• The role of nutritional psychiatry in practice
• How to identify key brain foods and learn how they can be used in treatment to impact mental health and behavioral issues for patients
• How to identify the nutritional and gastro-immunological underpinnings of depressive disorders and the nutritional and gastro-immunological interventions which have evidence based support in the treatment of depression

Speakers
  CAPT JOSEPH R. HIBBELN, MD is Acting Chief, Section on Nutritional Neurosciences in the Laboratory of Membrane Biophysics and Biochemistry at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Hibbeln originated the field of omega-3 fatty acids in depressive and aggressive disorders and has contributed more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific papers. With publication of treatment recommendations by the American Psychiatric Association for omega-3 fatty acids in 2006, he has assisted the development of this field from hypothesis through to treatment guidelines. He is a Captain in the United States Public Health Service, licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in California and Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology.
  ROBERT J. HEDAYA, MD, DLFAPA has been in medical practice as a psychiatrist and psychopharmacologist, since 1979. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical Center, where he teaches courses on Affective Disorders, Cognitive Therapy and PNIE (Psycho-neuro-immuno-endocrinology) since 1983. Dr. Hedaya is also a faculty member at the Institute for Functional Medicine, author of three books, and the founder of the National Center for Whole Psychiatry in Chevy Chase, MD. He is a frequent speaker, is recognized both nationally and internationally, and has appeared on 20/20 and 60 Minutes as well as in print in The New York Times and The Washington Post among other media outlets. Dr. Hedaya has a special interest in the effect of modifiable physiological factors on the function of the mind and brain in neuropsychiatric disorders across the lifespan.
  DREW RAMSEY, MD is a psychiatrist, author, and farmer. He is one of psychiatry’s leading proponents of using dietary change to help balance moods, sharpen brain function and improve mental health. Dr. Ramsey is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and in active clinical practice in New York City where his work focuses on the clinical treatment of depression and anxiety. Using the latest brain science and nutritional research, modern treatments, and an array of delicious food he aims to help people live to their happiest, healthiest lives.
