What have we done for you lately? Perhaps, much more than you realize! The following list will give you a good idea of what your Medical Society is doing for you. If you are a member, make sure you're taking advantage of all the benefits that membership affords you.

We are:

• Advocating vigorously both locally and nationally for meaningful medical liability reform, including a $250,000 cap on non-economic damages and a limit on attorneys’ fees.

• Working with the AMA and federation partners to secure a permanent fix to the Medicare payment formula and ensure more fair and adequate Medicare reimbursements.

• Continuing fight to exempt medical practices from the gross receipts tax on businesses to finance a baseball stadium in DC; as a result of MSDC efforts, the threshold was raised from $4 million to $5 million, reducing the number of physician practices impacted by the fee.

• Partnering with the DC Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking to ensure that health plans -- especially CareFirst BlueCoss BlueShield -- pay claims promptly and comply with District law governing fair business practices.

• E-mailing information on time-sensitive issues that impact the delivery of health care in the District.  Do we have your email address?  If not, don't be left out.  Send your email to Barbara Allen, MSDC's membership director, allen@msdc.org.

• Surveying our members to find out what products, services and events you want from your Medical Society.

• Working with the Department of Health on a variety of public health issues impacting physicians and patients, including the development of an enhanced system to get flu vaccine to MSDC members.
  

• Enhancing communicaton vehicles to members to make the process more nimble and interactive.

• Advocating for ALL DC physicians regardless of specialty.

• Serving as the voice of DC physicians.  Whether it is medical liability reform or any one of a number of "hot button" issues facing DC physicians, MSDC makes sure that the physician's perspective is heard and understood.

As a result of our ongoing strategic planning process, we are more responsive, more visible, and more effective on behalf of our membership. 

But, we won't rest on our laurels.  We will continue to explore alternatives, evaluate progress, and modify strategy so that your Medical Society membership remains dynamic and valuable.
