MSDC Calls for an Investigation into CareFirst's Unilateral Reimbursement Cut
In a letter dated May, 1, 2006, addressed to all CareFirst “providers,” the insurance company announced that allowances it had identified as being “above the market” would be “adjusted” effective July 1, 2006. Obviously, this may have a significant impact on numerous physician practices, and as a result, MSDC has taken the following actions: called on Robert Spagnoletti, the DC Attorney General to open an investigation as to whether monopolistic pricing may be at play; made a similar request of Thomas Hampton, the DC Insurance Commissioner, to likewise open an investigation; contacted Councilmember Jim Graham, Chair of the Consumer and Regulatory Committee and Councilmember David Catania, Chair of the Committee on Health, to inform them of the situation; and asked for assistance from the Private Sector Advocacy Group of the AMA. At press time, discussions are underway with the Office of the Attorney General.
